So I hear 2016 is trending. Now, I’ma hoarder of books, not pictures. So this is me in 2016 and sliiiiding into 2017.

When I look back at these pictures, I see the Naima that was a little uncomfortable in her skin, nervous about signings—who would come up to MY table??—still felt like a newbie author where hitting lists and flourishing in my career were dreams and fantasy. I was wowed that people actually knew me and had fear that I wouldn’t make it in publishing.

Now, in 2026, I still get nervous at signings and events (come visit my taaabllle!), but I’m also speaking at these events. I didn’t and haven’t let fear hold me prisoner and keep me from moving forward. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve wanted to quit more times than I can count. But if I had, I would’ve missed the lessons, beauty, disappointments that made me learn even more about faith. I wouldn’t have experienced strangers who became the best of friends. I wouldn’t have met the loveliest, most supportive and best readers ever.

I look back on 2016-ish and I’m grateful.

P.S. - The last picture is PROOF that my sister sits at my table and pretends to be me! 🤣🤣
